Canes Sign Prospect (F) Ryan Vandervlis

The Lethbridge Hurricanes are pleased to announce prospect Ryan Vandervlis has signed the Western Hockey League’s Standard Player Agreement.

The 1998-born forward from Red Deer, AB was listed by the Hurricanes in October 2013. Vandervlis played for his hometown Red Deer Chiefs in the AMMHL last season and was the captain of his team. He registered 26 points, including 14 goals, in his 37 games played while also adding 36 penalty minutes.

At 6’2 and 193 pounds, the Hurricanes scouting staff like his size and his ability to score. “He’s a big, strong player that works very hard and competes in all areas of the game and ice” commented Hurricanes General Manager Brad Robson. He added “Ryan works hard, goes to the net hard and takes the body. He battles and is a leader on his team; he is the captain for a reason.”

During the Hurricanes training camp, Vandervlis continued to impress the scouting and coaching staff. He was named to the pre-season roster and he’ll be with the hockey club as they kick off their six-game pre-season schedule this weekend at a tournament in Regina.

  1. Good news, but still no word on Jordan Bellerive!

  2. He will sign for sure. He seems like an amazing competitor and will want to play those 5 games when the Canes are out West. All these other kids signing is fantastic and lends some hope for the program turning around.

  3. I agree that I believe Bellerive will sign but he has no reason to be in a hurry. He can sit back and see if the issues of the past are getting solved or if he needs to pursue a different course. Once he signs, he and his parents lose that control. I also agree that the other signings are a good sign for the club. Hopefully things are moving in the right direction and the team shows significant improvement this season.

    1. That "improvement" all rests on the coaching staff. They did a horrible job last year. It's not hard to see that Berehowsky's systems didn't work. Teams ate the Canes up on defence and offence due to the coaches lack of experience and knowledge of the game. Just because someone has played in the NHL, doesn't mean they make a great coach. If the team has a bad October, I see changes to the coaching staff.
